Days like these

Sitting on the blanket that his great, great aunt lovingly made for him. A display of the shopping we’d just done spread around my lap: bananas, bread, and peanut m&m’s (a mama needs her fuel). Baxter wandered the vicinity, head up to the sky watching airplanes, a fist full of gingerbread men.

He excitedly exclaimed “Air-pane!” and looked to me for confirmation. He then did something he doesn’t often do. He ran towards me, turning around at last minute, and planted himself into the centre of my lap. He sat there eating another biscuit from his crumpled pack and smiled as the wind softly blew the long blades of grass surrounding us. Birds chirping. Sun shining. Ally Pally sitting hill top in the distance - Baxter reminding me of this by declaring “Appy Pappy far away!”

This is bliss, I thought.

These days are numbered. Days with just the two of us. With baby boy cooking not as slowly as I remember Bax doing. Our little world is about to change dramatically. I cannot block out the sense of that. But for now I’m learning to breathe in moments like these. Just me and my best little buddy. Airplane spotting while eating makeshift picnics.
